“Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but the thing dies in the process.” — E.B. White
Every discipline needs comedy—fiction, essay, drama, screenwriting. In this class, we’ll dare to dissect the best—Thurber, Sedaris, Twain, Simon, and beyond—to identify what makes them work. We’ll discover how the best comedy is anchored in truth and how to trust your unique point of view to find humor in everyday situations. In-class exercises will encourage you to write funny fast, under pressure, without overthinking. Take-home assignments offer the chance to apply what you’ve learned to your own genre, whether that’s a trenchant essay, a funny scene, or a comic beat in a screenplay. We might end up killing a few frogs, but we’ll be creating life.
