Seven Wednesday Sessions
3:30 – 5:30 EST
Dates: 9/23 – 11/4
Every novel is built one scene at a time. Whether you’re beginning a new manuscript or looking to strengthen an existing one, this workshop will help you master the art of writing scenes that engage readers, deepen character, and propel a story forward.
Each two-hour session combines craft discussion with hands-on writing. We will begin by exploring a different aspect of scene construction, examining the essential building blocks that make scenes compelling: character goals, conflict, setting, emotional stakes, turning points, subtext, pacing, and the ways scenes connect to form a satisfying narrative arc.
Along the way, we will also examine the major types of scenes that appear in novels—from opening scenes and inciting incidents to revelations, reversals, confrontations, discoveries, setbacks, climaxes, resolutions, and quieter scenes that develop relationships or reveal character.
The second half of each class is devoted to generative writing. Participants will respond to prompts that encourage experimentation, creativity, and the immediate application of the day’s craft lesson. These exercises are suitable for writers of all genres and can spark entirely new projects or enrich works already in progress.
Writers are welcome to share excerpts generated during class in a supportive, encouraging environment, though sharing is always optional.
Suitable for:
- emerging writers still finding their way
- experienced writers looking for inspiration, feedback, and community
