Seven Wednesday Sessions
6:30-8:30 EST
9/16 – 11/4 (OFF 10/21)
With fewer kids these days choosing to read for fun, it’s more important than ever to hook young readers from the very first line, page, and chapter of your middle grade or young adult novel. A strong MG and YA first chapter introduces a compelling character with a clear desire, establishes an intriguing inciting incident, and plunges right into the action. Through craft discussions, studying successful openings from published MG and YA novels, and workshopping in a supportive environment, you’ll learn how to write a gripping first chapter that will keep your reader’s attention. This workshop is targeted to middle grade and young adult writers who have completed a novel or have a novel in progress. Open to all genres.
Manuscript course: Each student will have one opportunity to submit their first chapter (up to 2500 words) to the instructor and class members. The group will read the work at home, write constructive comments on the pages, and provide feedback to the chapter in class.
