It’s one of the most important decisions a writer can make—and one of the most daunting: choosing a point-of-view. How do you decide between first-person, second person, third-person, or omniscient? Is it more than a matter of preference? Yes! In this class, you’ll discover a whole new way of analyzing point of view—one that’s focused on the author’s relationship with the reader. Through craft discussions, examples, and short free writes, you’ll explore the effects of different points of view and leave with practical steps for assessing which one best suits your intentions for your story.

In this workshop you can expect:

Guidelines for zeroing in on the best point-of-view for your story.
Prompts to help you test out your choices.
Discussions of published works that serve as helpful examples.
Multiple opportunities to share your in-class writing for constructive feedback.

Barbara Josselsohn

Barbara Josselsohn is the author of a series of three sweeping historical novels set in Italy during World War 2: Secrets of the Italian Island, The Lost Gift to the Italian Island, and The Forgotten Italian Restaurant. Her previous novels include The Lilac House, The Cranberry Inn, The Lily Garden, The Bluebell Girls and The Last Dreamer. Her articles and essays appear in The New York Times, New York Magazine, Writer’s Digest, Parents Magazine, Westchester Magazine, and other publications. Barbara has taught novel and essay writing at numerous venues and privately. She is a member of the Women’s Fiction Writers Association and is coordinator of the Scarsdale Library Writers Center.
