Use Your Voice/Tell Your Story: A Generative Writing Camp for 6th – 8th Graders

Monday – Friday

8/4 – 8/8

12:15 – 2 PM EST

In Person at the Westport Writers’ Workshop

Did you know that you already have all the tools you need to write great stories?
One pen/pencil + one notebook (or laptop)+your imagination=an endless supply of stories.
In this writing workshop, each day we will start off with some fun storytelling activities. Then
we’ll explore the elements in a story.

You will learn how to:

1. Develop convincing characters.
2. Write realistic dialogue.
3. Create a memorable setting.
4. Thread action through your story.

Christine will also reveal to you the magic ingredient that every single story needs!
You will spend some time writing in the workshop and then you will have the opportunity to
share with the group if you choose.

Christine Pakkala

Christine Pakkala is a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop MFA. She was a Fulbright Scholar (1994) in Helsinki, Finland, where she translated modern Finnish poetry. She taught 7th and 9th grade English at Horace Mann and has published essays in Salon, BrainChild and Serendipity and is the 2013 winner of the Ladies Home Journal essay contest. She’s the author of Last-But-Not-Least Lola Going Green, which was the winner of the Santa Monica Public Library's Green Prize, and a novel for teens, Jasmine and Maddie, which was a VOYA (Voice of Youth Advocate) Top Shelf pick and a Bank Street Best Book.Christine is working on a memoir and the first chapter of it will be published as an essay in "The Seventh Wave", an arts and literary magazine this fall.
