Four Thursday Sessions
10:00 AM-12:00 EST
Dates: 4/9 – 5/21 (OFF 4/16, 4/30 & 5/14)
Perfect for writers who are currently working on a manuscript or those who are simply curious and want a space to bring their questions, this bi-weekly 4-session class is geared towards answering any or all questions about the publishing industry for writers hoping to traditionally publish their work. Whether you’re a novelist, a memoirist, or someone who’s still finding their voice, this practical class can help get you started on understanding what it takes to begin your journey into publishing. Come ready with questions! The session breakdown is as follows:
- Introduction to the publishing industry: overview of terms such as agent, editor, query letter, comp titles, etc; overview of what an agent does, what the editor does, the difference in trying to sell a novel vs. memoir, answering questions about the instructor’s journey into publishing, how to do it with or without an MFA.
- Everything you need to know about finding an agent: What does an agent do? How do you find one? Students will spend the session working on building a list of agents for their work and learn about the different ways agents find writers; we will also look at where to submit short form work and writing an author bio, and other things that will help you get noticed by an agent.
- Query letter writing workshop: Students will work on a query letter (guidance will be provided for both a novel and a memoir). Whether your manuscript is complete or in-progress, having a template is very helpful!
- What the journey looks like once you have sold a manuscript – In the final session we will talk about and answer questions about publicity and marketing, cover art, author website; working with an editor once a book has sold, networking tips, next steps with the resources we’ve talked about.
