Writing Short: Flash Fiction & Nonfiction

Seven Wednesday Sessions

10 – 12 EST

Dates: 1/21 – 3/11 (off 2/18)

In flash, fiction and nonfiction writers become attuned to language on the sentence level. This is good practice for writers of all genres, as you’ll learn how to transform abstract ideas into specific moments. We’ll pay close attention to pacing, metaphor & imagery, endings, and poetic techniques to employ in writing flash. For continuing students, we’ll also study dialogue/interiority, point of view, metaphor, and micros. There is room to experiment and take more risks with prose written in 1,000 words or less. The workshop will also cover prose poems, micros and hermit crab fiction/nonfiction. Each week we’ll study examples of both well-known and more obscure writers who have mastered this form.

This workshop is ideal for writers who:

  • Want to write new stories or revise and complete drafts
  • Are beginning or intermediate writers looking to hone their craft
  • Want to learn more about writing through giving and receiving feedback

Students can expect to:

  • Write to unique prompts during and in between workshop

  • Experiment with different genres and forms

  • Learn how to research and submit to literary journals and contests
