What is multicultural writing? How can we enrich our writing by expanding our cultural and geographical borders? Translated literature shows us different ways of looking at structure and themes and allows us to travel the world on the page. In this class, we’ll read excerpts from authors who portray other cultures (Edwige Danticat, David Diop, and Elena Ferrante, among them) and issues of immigration and displacement. We’ll discover new texts and "steal" from the selected authors to expand our horizons.

What we'll do:

  • Write in class and at home every week
  • Discuss our writing
  • Discover new texts and learn how foreign writers deal with key elements of craft
  • Learn how differences in craft and perspective can help us write better
  • Write out of our comfort zone

This class is ideal for people who:

  • Want to discover new authors to inspire their writing
  • Want to write out of their comfort zone
  • Are interested in other cultures as a form of inspiration
  • Want to play with different perspectives in craft
  • Are curious writers!
