SUMMARY:Int/Adv Fiction
DESCRIPTION:Five Monday Sessions \n10 AM – 12:30 PM EST \nDates: 11/9 – 12/7 \nThe most successful writers have a network of peers weighing in on their manuscripts and\, more generally\, pulling for them. In my class\, I seek to create this same nurturing\, collaborative atmosphere. Each week\, you’ll share a brief excerpt of up to five double-spaced pages from an ongoing project — a novel or short story — and I’ll lead a constructive discussion of the manuscript\, highlighting its positive aspects and suggesting ways to improve it. If time allows\, there may also be general discussions of craft and some in-class writing.   Open to writers who have had at least a year of previous workshop experience and who are working on a novel or short stories. \nIn this class\, writers can expect: \n\nTo gain new insights into what you’re doing well in terms of craft\nTo identify what aspects of your work you might strengthen\nTo refine your narrative arc\nTo find a nurturing atmosphere with like-minded peers\nTo learn about different approaches to the writing and editing process

SUMMARY:Four Essays in Four Weeks - Monday
DESCRIPTION:Four Monday Sessions \n 1 – 3 EST \nDates: 11/9- 12/7 (OFF 11/16) \n  \nThis seven-week course takes its premise from the belief that at the heart of any literary essay is an unaswerable question. The form famously takes its name from the French verb meaning “to try”–for this reason\, while finishing an essay takes patience and clear-minded revision\, it can be extremely effective to generate first drafts of essays quickly\, without overthinking. By the end of the session\, students will have four essay drafts and a wealth of feedback from which to revise and polish.

SUMMARY:Writing About Your Life
DESCRIPTION:Five Monday Sessions \n11/9 – 12/7 \n6:30 – 9 EST \nThis craft-focused workshop revolves around writing one’s stories from life. Participants will be guided in creating and revising compelling\, well-crafted personal essays and full-length memoirs. Beyond craft and technique\, we’ll challenge ourselves to dig deep into our personal histories and to commit to the page the powerful emotions that galvanize our stories. In the workshop\, we aim to create a community of writers who support one another by practicing deep listening\, compassionate responses\, and thoughtful feedback. We recognize that writing is a risky endeavor and that sharing what we write in a workshop setting requires courage. As a community\, we support one another in that endeavor by offering rigorous support and a gentle critique.\n\nEach participant’s material will be shared each week in a constructive and supportive atmosphere designed to develop one’s own editing skills while elevating the quality of the writing. Memoir and essay publishing strategies will occasionally be discussed as they are appropriate to the group members.

SUMMARY:Writing Historical Fiction That Matters Today - MS
DESCRIPTION:Five Tuesday Sessions \n10:00-12:00 EST  \nDates: 11/10 – 12/8 \nIs there a time period from the past that moves you? An era you feel connected to? Many writers find that uncovering a moment in history through fiction can be the best way to reveal truths about the present moment – which may be why historical fiction remains such a popular genre. This workshop is for writers who are setting their story in a time period other than our own. Through readings from published works\, craft discussions\, research guidance\, and lots of workshopping in a supportive and motivating environment\, you’ll learn how to build a story that’s placed in the past yet feels universal and compelling to contemporary readers. Open to writers who have an idea and have started the writing process. \nManuscript course: In addition to bringing up to five pages each week to read aloud to the class for discussion\, each student will have one opportunity to submit up to fifteen double-spaced pages to the instructor and class members. The group will read the work ahead of time and come prepared to provide constructive feedback during class\, following guidelines that will be presented at our first meeting.

SUMMARY:Upper-Level Memoir - MS
DESCRIPTION:Four Wednesday Sessions \n10:30 – 12:30 EST \nDates: 11/11- 12/16 (OFF 11/18 & 11/25) \nIn The Art of Memoir\, Mary Karr writes that “every writer needs two selves–the generative self and the editor self.” This upper level class is for intermediate and advanced writers looking for both. Writers should be working on a memoir rather than reported nonfiction or journalism\, but within the memoir genre\, work need not fit a certain style to be a good fit for this class. \nWe will begin each class with a quick 10 minute generative exercise\, and then writers will share and receive feedback. Each writer will have the opportunity to share up to 15 pages of writing during two occasions throughout the summer session. \nIn addition to discussion of specific pages\, we’ll also tackle some of the broader questions of upper-level memoir writing. Students are encouraged to take risks stylistically and emotionally. How do we write about people we love? About people who have harmed us? When does chronological structure work and when is it best to try another narrative frame? ist how factually verifiable do the details in a memoir have to be? How much room is there for more research in a memoir? \nManuscript Class: Each student should submit up to 1500 words of work in progress by the Sunday before class. Amanda will distribute the class set of manuscripts in one bundle on Monday morning and each student should come to class prepared with notes on the work of each other writer\, including a one sentence summary of the piece’s central idea\, the most resonant moments\, wording\, or details\, and noting places of confusion.

SUMMARY:Scene by Scene: Building Powerful Fiction One Scene at a Time
DESCRIPTION:Five Wednesday Sessions  \n3:30 – 5:30 EST \nDates: 11/11 – 12/16 (OFF 11/25) \nEvery novel is built one scene at a time. Whether you’re beginning a new manuscript or looking to strengthen an existing one\, this workshop will help you master the art of writing scenes that engage readers\, deepen character\, and propel a story forward. \nEach two-hour session combines craft discussion with hands-on writing. We will begin by exploring a different aspect of scene construction\, examining the essential building blocks that make scenes compelling: character goals\, conflict\, setting\, emotional stakes\, turning points\, subtext\, pacing\, and the ways scenes connect to form a satisfying narrative arc. \nAlong the way\, we will also examine the major types of scenes that appear in novels—from opening scenes and inciting incidents to revelations\, reversals\, confrontations\, discoveries\, setbacks\, climaxes\, resolutions\, and quieter scenes that develop relationships or reveal character.  \nThe second half of each class is devoted to generative writing. Participants will respond to prompts that encourage experimentation\, creativity\, and the immediate application of the day’s craft lesson. These exercises are suitable for writers of all genres and can spark entirely new projects or enrich works already in progress. \nWriters are welcome to share excerpts generated during class in a supportive\, encouraging environment\, though sharing is always optional. \nSuitable for: \n\nemerging writers still finding their way\nexperienced writers looking for inspiration\, feedback\, and community

SUMMARY:If It’s True: A Creative Nonfiction Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Five Thursday Sessions \n6:00-8:00pm EST \nDates: 11/12 – 12/17 (OFF 11/26) \nManuscript Course \nIt’s become the conundrum in literary adventures to make a clear distinction in a memoir between what’s true and what’s made up. But memoir—the form itself—can be as various\, wild and eclectic as the individual who setting their life to the music of life sentences. Anything goes\, if it moves the reader. And besides\, truth\, of so I feel\, is relative when talking about art. \nThere are many ways of negotiating that truth in writing the essay or its longer form\, the memoir. “It’s all in the art\, you don’t get credit for living\,” V.S. Pritchett famously said. And so\, the strategy for any autobiographical writing\, is to raise the stakes and write about one’s life not merely as something alive\, but as something mysterious to be celebrated. \nParticipants will bring new and/or revised work to share every week to a supportive and constructive meeting space which will include an ongoing discussion not only about how your truth is the only one that matters in your writing\, but also how to organize ideas on the page and how revision\, syntax\, and even writing off the subject\, or free writing\, can help to bring the writing to life. In addition\, we will also read a selection of work by writers who are considered vital in the creative non-fiction field.
